Our History

The First 45 Years

William F. Clausing founded International Typewriter Exchange in 1915. During the first 45 years of operation, the company sold pre-owned and reconditioned typewriters to the largest catalog houses in the country, including Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward’s, Spiegel’s, and Alden’s. In order to expand its customer base, the company began selling reconditioned office equipment to other office machine dealers on a national basis. In 1941, International Typewriter Exchange began joining various trade related associations, including the National Office Machines Dealers Association (NOMDA), now known as Business Technology Association (BTA).

The 1960s

In 1960, the company bought the Clausing building, a 4-story brick building with 45,000 square feet, which it continues to occupy just west of downtown Chicago.

In 1965, International Typewriter Exchange acquired Reliable Typewriter and Adding Machine Company, thus marking the first time the company ventured out to distribute products other than typewriters, mostly used and reconditioned adding machines and calculators.

The 1970s

In the early 1970s, International Typewriter Exchange became known as ITE, and was appointed as the exclusive distributor for the entire United States and Canada for the brand new Optima line of manual typewriters and Erika portable typewriters by the German manufacturing company Robotron. With that connection, ITE was awarded the Government Services Administration (GSA) contract for manual office typewriters for two successive years and sold thousands of typewriters to the United States Government.

The 1980s

In the early 1980s, ITE was appointed by IBM as one of only seven national distributors for the highly successful IBM Selectric 2 and later IBM Selectric 3 typewriters. ITE has been recognized numerous times for outstanding sales and support of the Lexmark product line, including being named as Lexmark’s Midwest Dealer of the Year three successive years. In the later 1980s, ITE became a one-stop shop for office machine dealers by adding a variety of new products from companies such as Canon, Panasonic, Olympia, Brother, Nakajima, Plus, Martin Yale, Ricoh, Copystar, and others.

The 1990s

During the 1990s, the company continued to add new customers and product lines. In order to better reflect the wide diversity of product lines offered, ITE became known as ITE Distributing.

The 2000s and Today

With its humble beginning in the typewriter industry, ITE continues to support its customers with their Gold-Medal refurbishing program for Lexmark/IBM pre-owned Wheelwriter typewriters, while continually expanding into new areas. Recently, ITE is recognized as the largest distributor of Panasonic’s Panaboard electronic copy boards and has recently added Panasonic’s series of color laser printers to its cadre of offerings to its customers. Founded over 95 years ago, ITE was built on a foundation of excellent customer service, a family tradition that continues today.
